Gamify Your Life
There is a new game in town. The new game is your life! It is called “Gamify Your Life”. Gamification is not a new idea. But it is now being applied to life.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “the word refers to the incorporation of game elements, like point and reward systems, to tasks as incentives for people to participate. In other words, gamification is about making something potentially tedious into a game.” When something feels like a game, it is less tedious and more fun.
The Concept of Gamification
The concept of gamification is simple. You basically apply the same mechanics, rules, rewards and points to your life just like a game. The aim is to engage you and motivate you to achieve your goals using levels. Gamification ups the fun factor. As a result goals seem manageable.
Life is really like a game. Every day we go through wins, losses and everything in between. But when you get your mind in alignment with the concept of gamification your life takes on a very different quality.
Why Gamification works
Gamification is really effective because it taps our natural desire for competition and achievement. As well as our basic need to win. We all have an innate drive to compete and win. Does this make sense? No one likes to lose. Winning appeals to our inner desire for status and gain. That is why gamification is so powerful. It makes us strive and pushes us to win.
How Gamifying your life works?
The idea is to treat all areas of your life like a game with levels. Games have rules and instructions to follow in order to beat the game. Basically that is what gamification is all about. Create your own 10-level game for your life. So start with baby steps. You ultimately want to create the habit and make it stick.
How to Gamify Your Life
Here are some steps to help you create your own 10-level game.
Step 1: Identify the task or activity you want to gamify.
Step 2: Set the levels you must reach in order to beat the game (level should progress from easy to more challenging. Aim for 10 levels per game, it could be less. Do what works for you.)
Step 3: Determine how you will meet each level.
Step 4: Create the rules for each level. (Basic rule is that you can not move to the next level with out first completing the previous level. This ensures you don’t skip any levels.)
Step 5 Decide on the rewards for each level or the game (which ever you chose. After all it is your game and you make the rules.)
You want to keep leveling up your life. So experiment. Try things out. Most of all have fun! After all it is a game.
Every level you beat of your life game reward yourself! The idea is that levels will get progressively harder. But you can do it! Levels compared to big goals keep you focused and motivated. They are achievable and less daunting. Celebrate the small wins along the way and just keep leveling up.
From my own experience
I have only started gamifying my own life very recently. For me I basically apply gamification to all areas of my life. Whether it is at work, at play, in relationships/friendships, with my family, with my business. Now that I have learned this concept I have literally gamified everything! There is the morning routine game; the eat this not that game; the be more productive at work game; the exercise for 3o-minutes every day game; the call a friend game; the social media game; the pay the bills game. I think you get the idea. Since making this shift in my mindset I am not stressed about not achieving my goals.
I focus on the next level and what I need to do to get to the next level after that. In a way I have become my own life coach. I find I have more drive and of course I want to win. I no longer look at tasks the same way. It is fun and games.
Every day my thinking is what games am I going to play for the day; and how I will reach each level of the different games. It is a lot more fun I can tell you that much. Funny thing is everything feels easy and doable. So each night before I go to bed I set the game levels for the next day.
The Benefits of Gamifying Your Life
When you gamify your life literally watch as the stress and struggle jut disappear. Your life just seems so much more manageable. At the end of the day you feel accomplished like you have gotten somewhere. You are more productive. I can tell you from my own experience it feels really great to see my daily progress towards my life goals.
